Three p.m. Show time.

Holly exited her office with Jon on her mind. In fact, thoughts of him bled into every other thought. She wasn’t sure how she would get over her attraction to him as long as he was so tall, handsome, smart, resourceful, and sweet on her. He really could put a little effort into being less of a hunk, if he wanted to help her out here. As much as she struggled to put the fascination away, his face now floated through her mind like a screensaver. She’d done a pretty good job at suppressing it so far...until today. Thought of him seemed to be in masochistic overdrive.

Holly knocked on his door and, with his shouted permission, she entered Jon’s office, catching him on the phone. She drew the envelope from her brown suit jacket and waved it between them to remind him of the magic hour. He checked his own watch in confirmation, and he quickly ended the business call.

“You said something weird would happen to Gladys’s crew. I saw them all after their morning clinic visits, and they gave away no signs of strangeness. Did your test flop?”

Donning an expression of unshakable confidence, he rose from the desk and stepped to the door, opening it for her. “Let’s see what answers await us.”

They paced through the accounting desks beyond their offices, and they slowed along the way to socialize a bit with the accounting staff. Jon got along with everyone, and all had pleasant greetings for them both. Holly felt unusually aware of him and didn’t know why today her attraction to him would be a bit more of a challenge than days past. Maybe it was the concern he showed for the employees, wanting to expose the evil lurking in the shadows of TDG. Maybe it was how he treated her more like a partner than a flunky. She really liked that. Maybe it was his attentive eyes turning peridot when he concentrated his attention on her, or his tall, sinewy build that made her warm. Maybe having him in her everyday life was becoming a want, woefully counter-productive to her plans not to fall in love with her boss.

When they reached the heavy security doors that opened up into the double-storied bullpen, she stepped out onto the concrete catwalk that overlooked the billing crew on the first floor. Her eyes drew immediately to the fact that all of Gladys’s crew was now wearing blue. Holly was sure she would’ve noticed if they’d been wearing all blue this morning. She’d been on the look-out for a sign of Jon’s tampering.

With him standing silent beside her, she ripped into the envelope to see his handwritten statement on her stationery stating Gladys’s team would buy various blue outfits at the mall during lunch and wear them for the rest of the day.

“Oh, God,” Holly muttered, her hand covering her mouth over the implications. Her stomach took a churn. This was it, the hardcore undeniable truth that TDG was indeed using mind-control methods.
